Software Improvement Group (SIG) joins ISO, CEN and NEN standardization efforts for Artificial Intelligence

SIG Principal Consultant Rob van der Veer will contribute the software engineering expertise needed to advance international standards for successful, responsible use of AI technology

Amsterdam, September 3, 2020Software Improvement Group (SIG), the independent authority on software assurance, today announced that Rob van der Veer, Principal Consultant, Security & Privacy, will serve as a member of the NEN norms committee for Artificial Intelligence and Big Data to collaborate on AI standards developed by ISO and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).

NEN, the Dutch national standardization institute, is a member body of ISO and provides input from the Netherlands to shape AI standards developed worldwide at ISO and Europe-wide at CEN.

Software engineering is a crucial component to achieving trustworthy, successful AI. However, AI initiatives fail far too often, due to security and privacy issues, time pressure, unfamiliar paradigms and lack of best practices in application development. To ensure that AI standards include the necessary principles on solid engineering and code quality, van der Veer will provide the NEN, ISO and CEN committees with SIG expertise on AI engineering, shed light on the AI challenges facing SIG clients and contribute best practices for organizations applying AI.

Rob van der Veer, Principal Consultant, Security & Privacy at SIG: “As AI innovation accelerates, organizations in every domain are dealing with questions such as, ‘Under what conditions should we allow algorithms to make decisions for us?’ and ‘How should AI systems be engineered so that they are secure and privacy preserving?’ I look forward to working with the standardization organizations to establish clear criteria for these issues so that we can both benefit and protect ourselves from smart algorithms.”

Van der Veer brings to his role 18 years of experience in the field of artificial intelligence, having held positions as CEO, CTO, data scientist, researcher and programmer. He has implemented a wide variety of AI projects throughout his career ranging from predictive crime analysis to customer profiling for e-commerce. He holds a master’s degree in computer science for AI from the University of Twente in the Netherlands.

Information about SIG solutions around software assurance for AI can be found on the company website.
