Software Improvement Group (SIG) celebrates 20th anniversary with launch of 100% online Digital Health Management services

Amsterdam - April 1, 2020: The coronavirus pandemic will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the way the world collaborates. Today, during its 20th anniversary celebration, Software Improvement Group (SIG) announced its readiness for the future: the company has digitalized its most in-demand consulting capabilities in its software assurance platform, Sigrid®, providing its services 100% online.

The Sigrid technology platform has always been cloud-based. Now, SIG launches its comprehensive, cloud-based consultancy services to support business and IT leaders around the world in creating healthy, secure applications they can trust and build upon.
Digitalizing core capabilities

Luc Brandts, CEO of SIG: “Our business model has always leveraged cloud technology, making it possible for our consultants to assess our customers’ code remotely. We have also developed a delivery model that allows our consultants to carry out an assessment without the customer’s code leaving its premises. As an additional benefit, the code measurements feed directly into our ISO 25010 model as well as the benchmark that belongs to it. This enables us to assist any customer, located anywhere in the world, with an unparalleled combination of technology and services.”

“However, for some of our most in-demand consulting capabilities, such as the Cost Estimation model and Open Source Health, clients were dependent on our consultants’ availability. We have automated these core capabilities, empowering clients with “always on” abilities to measure the quality of their software – while freeing up our consultants to solve new complex customer challenges.“
A low-effort path to high-order needs

The Sigrid platform is designed to analyze and measure the quality of code, architecture and entire portfolios. It is continuously being populated with additional IP developed by SIG, such as:

  • proprietary software quality measurement models, based on ISO standards, such as maintainability, security, and Open Source Health.

  • the world's largest software quality benchmark, developed from the 33 billion lines of code we’ve assessed. Our clients’ applications are measured against this data and evaluated accordingly.

  • new, updated research and findings from our scientific research department.

Based on the analyses, Sigrid provides all stakeholders - including both management and development teams - with actionable insights in a single access point, where they can continuously monitor and manage the health of their application portfolio.
Software Assurance with a Service

Wouter Knigge, COO of SIG: “There are attributes that are uniquely human, and people still like to talk to people when it comes to the big stuff. That’s why we offer two engagement models providing human intelligence alongside Sigrid, online and on-premise. Examples include consultancy support in interpreting and acting on results of the Sigrid analysis, as well as providing guidance and recommendations more broadly around software architecture, beyond the outcomes within the Sigrid platform.”
Creating a healthier digital world since 2000

Luc Brandts: “As we now celebrate our company’s 20th anniversary, we find ourselves in a stronger position than ever to help create a healthier digital world. This terrible pandemic has proven to be an enormous challenge for all. For us, it was also a litmus test for our delivery models. We believe this pandemic will underline the needs for more modern and online methods of delivery. We utilized all of our options in becoming a 100% remote service provider, and we're now fully operational whenever and wherever our customers need us. We’re committed to continue building out our digital offerings to make it even more simple and seamless for our customers to gain greater control over the health of their software.”

SIG M&A Software Analysis Reveals Concerning Trends In Software Quality

NEW YORK, NY, USA, June 10, 2024

Software Improvement Group (SIG), the leading independent institute specializing in software health analysis, has significant concerns about the quality of software involved in mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Out of 531 M&A-related software projects analyzed, SIG found that the average software quality scores were significantly below the market average. This implies that companies face two times lower development efficiency and a considerably higher risk of defects and vulnerabilities.

Key findings

  • Quality Scores Below Market Average: The study revealed that software involved in these transactions often lags behind industry standards, presenting substantial risks for acquirers.
  • High Technical Debt: On average, technical debt constitutes 31% of the total code volume, indicating severe underlying issues in software maintainability and scalability.
  • Informed Investment Decisions: Companies that utilized SIG’s software economics methodology were able to make strategic investments to mitigate these technical debt challenges effectively.

SIG possesses unparalleled expertise and resources to assess the build quality, scalability, and security of software assets. With the world’s largest software metrics database, encompassing an impressive 200 billion lines of code and 18,000 system inspections spanning over 300 technologies, SIG provides comprehensive evaluations that stand as a testament to our unwavering dedication to creating a healthier digital world.

Luc Brands, CEO of Software Improvement Group: “At SIG, we believe private equity firms are not as in control as they could and should be. Through software economics, we ensure thorough code analysis, benchmarking, architecture investigation, and cost modeling. This approach guarantees clarity regarding the true scalability of acquired assets.”

To further facilitate this conversation, Software Improvement Group and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) will be hosting a webinar titled “Software Economics for Private Equity: How to Evaluate the Quality and Value of Software Assets” on June 27th. The webinar will provide private equity companies with insights into the importance of software asset valuation. Private equity firms are invited to join the webinar to gain valuable knowledge and insights from industry experts.

In conclusion, software assets represent a significant opportunity for private equity firms to drive value creation. By embracing advanced software economics and leveraging SIG’s expertise, private equity firms can make informed decisions that maximize returns and mitigate risks in their software investments.
