Software Improvement Group co-creates new NPR 5333 standard

Software Improvement Group

Software Improvement Group continues bridging the gap between IT and executive leadership by contributing to a new NEN standard that provides concrete metrics for managing agile projects.

Amsterdam, 29 October 2025 – Software Improvement Group (SIG) has contributed to the NPR 5333, a new standard providing a clear basis for managing agile projects, published by the Netherlands Standardization Institute (NEN) on October 29th, 2025.

For over a decade, SIG has actively participated and collaborated with NEN, contributing to the development and enhancement of various ISO standards and NPR publications related to Software and systems engineering, as well as AI & Big data.

As organizations increasingly adopt agile methodologies to drive innovation and efficiency, the need for clear guidelines and standards is essential. Especially today, when most organizations still operate with limited insight into the state of their IT landscape and struggle to translate technical complexities into clear financial and operational impacts.

It’s important to bridge the gap between IT and executive leadership so that organizations can have a shared understanding and better decision-making. This is what SIG calls ‘Shift up‘. This new approach aligns with NPR 5333.

“Over the years, we have made significant contributions to the development of various leading standards and have also assisted many organizations in implementing them,” said Luc Brandts, CEO of Software Improvement Group, “The NPR5333 will enable organizations to make better IT decisions based on objective measurements”.

What is the NPR 5333?

NPR 5333 provides a framework for measuring a balanced set of metrics related to software development projects. Its goal is to enhance transparency and insights, enabling early detection of issues and fostering clear communication between stakeholders regarding expected outcomes.

The document, created through a consensus-based process by industry experts and subjected to public peer review, is managed and published by NEN. With over 100 pages and contributions from 50 active contributors, NPR 5333 includes 46 metrics.

These metrics help organizations measure functionality delivered, source code quality, time and money spent, and stakeholder satisfaction.

“The new NPR 5333 offers concrete metrics for assessing quality and progress within agile projects,” said Lodewijk Bergmans, NEN’s Software and Systems Engineering Committee Member and Sr. Researcher at Software Improvement Group. “By measuring a balanced set of metrics, organizations can provide transparency and insights that enable early detection of issues and clear communication between stakeholders about the expected results”.

The NPR 5333 is available on NEN’s website. The English version is coming soon.
